University of Washington professor Emily Bender argues the AI safety debate is too focused on hypothetical existential threats while overlooking harms already happening today. She points to environmental costs, disruption to workers, surveillance, misinformation and chatbot dependence. She argues that incidents involving AI systems accessing outside networks should be viewed as the responsibility of the companies deploying them – not as autonomous models “going rogue.” She joins Ed Ludlow on “Bloomberg Tech.”
