Bunching Deductions Into One Year Can Beat the Standard Deduction

If your itemized deductions hover just below the standard deduction threshold most years, try bunching. Concentrate two years of charitable donations or other deductible expenses into one year so you can itemize that year and take the standard deduction the next. The total giving stays the same, but the tax benefit doubles in the bunching year.

The strategy works because the standard deduction resets every year. Deductible expenses that fall short of the line earn you nothing extra, and you can’t bank the shortfall for later. Donations that almost reach the threshold are, for tax purposes, invisible.

Say your itemized expenses land at nine-tenths of the standard deduction every year. Itemizing never wins. Doubled up, those same expenses sail past the threshold in the bunching year, and you still claim the full standard deduction in the off year. Same money out the door. Two wins instead of two near misses.

This fits anyone whose deductions flirt with the threshold: homeowners with mortgage interest and state taxes that get close, plus steady givers who donate every year regardless.

Charitable giving is the easiest expense to shift, and a donor-advised fund makes the timing painless. Contribute two years of gifts in one calendar year, claim the full deduction immediately, then send the money to your charities on whatever schedule you like. The charities never feel the gap.

Without a donor-advised fund, give in January and again in December of the same year to land two gifts in one tax year. Other expenses can move too. Pay property tax installments early where your county allows it, or schedule elective medical procedures for the bunching year. Timing deductions this way is completely legal. The IRS only cares which year the money actually left your hands.

Each fall, total what you expect to deduct and compare it to the current standard deduction. If you’re near the line, December is your window. One well-timed donation can flip the whole year from standard to itemized.
