Pairing a Category Card With a Flat-Rate Card Maximizes Every Purchase

Points or Cash Back – The Right Strategy Depends on How You’ll Redeem

This is everything that’s wrong with consumerism

A single flat-rate cash back card is simple but leaves rewards on the table. A two-card strategy pairs one card earning 3-5% on groceries and gas with one earning 1.5-2% on everything else, capturing higher rates where you spend most with a solid fallback everywhere else. Keep it simple enough that you use the right card automatically.

The difference is bigger than a percentage point or two suggests. Put $1,000 a month of grocery and gas spending on a flat 1.5% card and you collect $180 a year. Run the same purchases through a card earning 5% in those categories and you collect $600. Same spending, same effort, $420 more.

The two-card system works because each card fails where the other is strong. Category cards pay standout rates on groceries, gas, or dining, but most drop to 1% on everything else. Flat-rate cards never spike that high, but they never crater either. Pair them and every purchase lands on its best available rate. You’re not chasing rewards. You’re routing spending you already do through the card that pays the most for it.

Pull your last three months of statements and find where your money actually goes. Pick a category card that pays 3-5% on your biggest recurring category, then send every other purchase to a flat-rate card earning 1.5-2%. If the category card charges an annual fee, do the math first. The extra rewards need to clear the fee before the pairing pays off.

Two details keep the system honest. Check the category card’s cap, since many limit bonus rates to a set amount of spending per quarter or year and drop to 1% after. Once you hit it, move that spending to the flat-rate card. Then set the rule once: category card at the grocery store and gas pump, flat-rate card everywhere else, including subscriptions and online bills.

Pay both in full every month, because interest wipes out rewards many times over. And hold off on a third card until the first two feel automatic. The strategy earns nothing if you’re standing at the register trying to remember which card does what.
