Greenberg Traurig has deployed the next generation of CoCounsel Legal, Thomson Reuters’ agentic AI for legal professionals, giving lawyers across the firm’s global offices access to a system that plans, researches, and drafts through the stages of a legal matter, the firm announced on August 26, 2026.
The rollout caps a four-year collaboration in which Greenberg Traurig attorneys received early access to CoCounsel Legal, sat in on beta testing, and helped shape the product’s development and integrations. The firm, an AmLaw 20 outfit with roughly 3,200 lawyers across 51 locations in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia, is putting the tool in front of its entire legal workforce rather than running it as a limited pilot.
“What distinguishes Greenberg Traurig is not technology alone, but the talented professionals who use it to help solve complex challenges for our clients,” Chief Executive Officer Brian L. Duffy said in the announcement. “By combining this technology with the experience and judgment of our lawyers, we are enhancing our ability to deliver efficient, forward-looking, and client-centered legal services.”
What the Next Generation of CoCounsel Legal Actually Does
The distinction Thomson Reuters is selling with this generation is agentic execution: rather than answering a single query, CoCounsel Legal plans an approach, retrieves authoritative content, reasons through the issues, and drafts with citations, adapting mid-workflow as new facts emerge. Every output is grounded in Westlaw and Practical Law content, guided by 35 million West Key Number classifications and 3.9 million Precision Research attributes, with reasoning and citations that attorneys can inspect rather than simply accept, according to the release.
A feature called Brief Builder extends that chain further, converting grounded research and reasoning directly into a structured, court-ready draft brief. On Thomson Reuters’ CoCounsel Legal product page, the company describes the system as engineered to work at the level of a senior associate — developing the legal approach, working through each step, and delivering polished, cited work product from a single plain-language request. The same page lists newer capabilities including Workspaces, which keeps documents, templates, conversations, and matter history in one place so context carries between sessions, and Tabular Analysis, which reviews up to 10,000 documents against 100 questions with every answer traceable to its source.
“The legal industry is moving beyond AI that simply generates answers, and Greenberg Traurig’s deployment shows what that shift looks like in practice,” said Raghu Ramanathan, Thomson Reuters President, Legal Professionals, in the release. He framed the product around what Thomson Reuters calls its Fiduciary-Grade AI standard — the positioning that legal AI output must be transparent and accountable enough for professional reliance.
Where This Fits in Big Law’s AI Race
The deployment lands a day after Google took Gemini Enterprise into big law with legal-specific agents, part of a visible pattern in which large firms are moving from AI pilots to production commitments, and vendors are competing to be the platform those commitments land on. Thomson Reuters’ advantage in that contest is the content moat: CoCounsel Legal is the only legal AI built directly on Westlaw primary law and Practical Law guidance, the two reference sets most US litigators already bill against.
Greenberg Traurig’s integration stack points at how the firm intends to use it. Chief Pricing and Innovation Officer Matthew N. Beekhuizen cited the platform’s integration with DeepJudge, Westlaw, and Practical Law as the mechanism for letting lawyers “access firm and legal knowledge more effectively while maintaining the quality and professional judgment our clients expect.” DeepJudge is the piece that pulls the firm’s own internal knowledge into the same workspace as Thomson Reuters’ published authority — the difference between an AI that knows the law and one that also knows how this firm has handled similar matters. The product page lists further integrations with iManage, NetDocuments, SharePoint, HighQ, Box, and Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Teams, which matters for a deployment at this scale: a tool that lives inside the document management and email systems 3,200 lawyers already use has a shorter path to daily use than one that lives in a separate tab.
The Governance Terms Attached to the Rollout
The release spells out the conditions under which the firm’s lawyers will actually use the system, and they read like the terms sheet of the deployment. Clients are made aware that lawyers use AI on their matters. AI-generated work products are reviewed by the lawyers handling the matter and by supervising shareholders before they reach a client. The firm applies information security and due diligence protocols to each AI tool it deploys, designed to ensure that AI models do not train on client data and that data rights and confidentiality obligations are respected at every stage.
For Greenberg Traurig, the four-year run-up is the part competitors will study. Rather than signing an enterprise agreement and announcing seat counts, the firm embedded with the vendor through beta cycles and integration work, and is only now taking the product firmwide.
