Wordsmith Extends Series B With Million to Scale AI for In-House Legal Teams – Unite.AI
ShareShareShareShareShare

Wordsmith AI has secured a $14 million extension to its Series B financing as companies increasingly explore whether artificial intelligence can help their internal legal teams handle work that would traditionally be sent to outside counsel.

The new investment was led by Intact Private Capital, with participation from existing backers Highland Europe and Index Ventures. FT Ventures, the investment arm of the Financial Times, has also joined the company’s shareholder base.

Wordsmith’s Series B Grows to $84 Million

The extension follows the $70 million Series B that Wordsmith announced in June 2026. That earlier round brought the company’s disclosed funding to $100 million, meaning the latest investment increases the Series B to $84 million and Wordsmith’s total financing to approximately $114 million.

Wordsmith says its revenue has grown fourteenfold over the past year, while its platform is now used by more than 500 companies. Customers identified by the company include BT, Canva, the Financial Times, Sage, Safelite, and Starling.

The size and timing of the extension suggest that investors see an opportunity extending beyond individual productivity tools for lawyers. Wordsmith is attempting to become part of the operational infrastructure through which companies receive, process, approve, and document legal requests.

Bringing More Legal Work Inside the Enterprise

Wordsmith is built specifically for corporate legal departments rather than external law firms. This distinction influences both the platform’s product design and its underlying economic argument.

Law firms typically organize work around individual client matters and billable hours. In-house teams face a different set of pressures. They must respond to requests from sales, procurement, human resources, finance, and other departments while controlling legal risk and managing spending on external counsel.

Wordsmith’s platform acts as a central entry point for those requests. AI agents can complete routine work using company-approved rules and playbooks, while matters requiring interpretation or judgment are escalated to lawyers. The platform records the steps taken throughout the process, creating an audit trail that can be reviewed later.

The objective is not simply to generate documents faster. It is to give legal departments a system for deciding which work can be automated, which work needs internal review, and which matters still justify the involvement of an external law firm.

How Wordsmith’s Legal AI Platform Works

The platform combines several capabilities that have often been spread across contract-management systems, legal research tools, intake forms, document repositories, and general-purpose AI assistants.

Legal teams can use Wordsmith to review and redline contracts against internal playbooks, draft agreements, research legal questions, route requests for approval, and provide business teams with self-service access to approved legal information. Lawyers can also work through a Microsoft Word integration rather than moving documents into a separate interface.

Its research product combines information from more than 130 jurisdictions with company-specific documents, entity information, previous positions, and risk preferences. The platform also connects with corporate registries such as Companies House, EDGAR, and OpenCorporates to verify companies and officers.

Wordsmith can receive requests from the workplace applications employees already use. Its integrations include Slack, Google Drive, SharePoint, Notion, Confluence, HubSpot (HUBS ), Jira, and Ironclad, with additional connections available through Zapier and n8n.

This integration layer is important because legal automation depends heavily on adoption. A self-service system offers limited value when employees bypass it and continue sending unstructured requests through email or messaging applications. Embedding the legal workflow within those applications gives the platform a better chance of capturing requests before they become fragmented across an organization.

Expansion in North America and Regulated Industries

Wordsmith plans to use the additional capital to deepen its presence in North America and expand within financial services and insurance. These industries are attractive markets for legal automation because they combine high volumes of regulatory work with strict requirements around approvals, access controls, and auditability.

The involvement of Intact Private Capital may help Wordsmith build relationships within insurance and financial services, while the addition of FT Ventures brings both investment and an existing operational connection. The Financial Times selected Wordsmith for its own legal, compliance, and company-secretarial workflows before investing in the company.

Wordsmith supports enterprise identity providers including Okta, Microsoft Azure Active Directory, and Google Workspace. It also offers single sign-on, multifactor authentication, and role-based access controls, features that become increasingly important when AI systems are given access to confidential contracts, internal policies, and corporate records.

AI Could Change When Companies Call Outside Counsel

The broader consequence of platforms such as Wordsmith may be a shift in how legal work is divided between companies and law firms.

In-house teams have historically relied on external counsel not only for complex litigation or specialized advice, but also because they lacked the personnel and infrastructure to handle large volumes of routine work internally. AI agents could reduce that operational constraint by completing initial research, reviewing documents, preparing drafts, and organizing matters before a lawyer becomes involved.

That does not eliminate the need for external legal expertise. High-stakes disputes, novel regulatory questions, cross-border transactions, and matters requiring independent judgment will continue to require experienced counsel. The more immediate change may be that companies become more selective about when they seek that support.

Wordsmith’s challenge will be demonstrating that its agents can deliver consistent results across different departments, jurisdictions, and legal workflows without weakening human oversight. As deployments expand, accuracy, explainability, security, and the quality of escalation decisions will matter more than the volume of tasks the platform can automate.

The latest financing gives Wordsmith additional resources to pursue that model. It also reflects growing investor interest in AI systems designed not merely to assist individual professionals, but to reorganize how entire business functions receive and complete work.
