Your 401(k) Match Is Free Money

Your 401(k) Match Is Free Money
ShareShareShareShareShare

Just the Tip:

Your employer’s 401(k) match is a guaranteed instant return that no investment can replicate, and not contributing enough to capture it fully is leaving free money on the table. Find out the minimum contribution needed to get the full match and hit it every pay period. If you don’t know your match formula, check your benefits portal or ask HR right away.

Most people spend hours comparing investment options, chasing returns, and worrying about fees. They ignore the one move that beats all of it.

When your employer offers to match your 401(k) contributions, say dollar-for-dollar up to 3% of your salary, that contribution doesn’t just earn investment returns. It doubles your money before markets open. A $3,000 contribution becomes $6,000 immediately. No investment strategy, high-yield savings account, or brokerage play delivers that kind of instant return with zero risk.

The math is straightforward: contribute at least enough to capture the full match before directing money anywhere else. Not your emergency fund, not a taxable brokerage account, not extra debt payments beyond high-interest credit cards. The match comes first, every time.

The one caveat worth knowing is vesting schedules. Many employers require you to stay three to five years before you fully own the matched funds. That’s real, but it doesn’t change the decision. A match you receive after three years of service still beats walking away from it entirely. And if you leave before fully vesting, you keep your own contributions regardless.

To find your number, check your benefits portal or ask HR for the match formula. It’s typically expressed as a percentage of your salary or a dollar-for-dollar match up to a contribution cap. Either way, that threshold is the minimum you should be contributing.

If you don’t know what your employer matches, find out today. The contribution percentage you’re not capturing doesn’t roll over. It’s gone each pay period you don’t act.
