The photobooth officially turns 100 in 2025. There are only about 200 working analog booths left in the world. And a century in, they are surging in popularity with Gen Z, who are specifically seeking out the old school booths. These complex machines are mini darkrooms that run on film and mechanical parts, instead of the computers and printers of digital photobooths. Most parts are no longer made. In fact, the entire industry was almost wiped out when the Russia-Ukraine war cut off access to certain supplies.
So, can analog photobooths survive another hundred years? In this week’s Stay Tuned feature, we take a look at what it takes to keep these machines running and the tiny but passionate community of operators behind them.
