CAROLINE WOODS: Meta is dialing back what teens can see on Instagram.
The social media giant says it will limit content for users under 18 to roughly the same level as a PG-13 movie.
That means no posts with sexualized content, strong language, or references to drugs and alcohol.
Instagram will also hide certain accounts from teens – including those linking to adult sites like OnlyFans or online liquor stores. Minors won’t be able to follow these accounts, and if they already do, they won’t be able to see or interact with the content.
Teens will automatically be placed into the new 13-plus setting and can’t opt out without a parent’s permission. Parents can also choose an even stricter option, and for the first time, flag content they think their teens shouldn’t see.
Meta says it will use age-prediction technology to enforce these protections, even if teens claim to be adults.
