CAROLINE WOODS: Diabetes drug prices are getting a shake-up.
U.S. patients can now pay $499 a month in cash for three dose sizes of Ozempic. That’s over 50% off the list price – but only for eligible cash-paying patients with type 2 diabetes.
The deal is available through Novo Nordisk’s own pharmacy, a partnership with GoodRx, and other platforms.
Novo already sells Wegovy – the weight-loss version of Ozempic – at that same $499 price point through its NovoCare pharmacy. This latest move targets patients without insurance coverage.
And it comes as Washington turns up the heat on drugmakers. President Trump and lawmakers have been pressing companies to bring down costs of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, which sell for far more in the U.S. than overseas.
Novo isn’t alone. Rival Eli Lilly has also moved to slash prices on its blockbuster diabetes and weight-loss drugs for cash-paying patients. More competition could mean more savings for patients – at least for now
