Big news for Apple Watch users in the U.S.—blood oxygen monitoring is back. But, there’s a twist.
If you have an Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, or Ultra 2 that shipped without the feature because of Apple’s legal fight with medical tech company Masimo, you can now get it back with a software update.
The catch? The readings won’t show up on your wrist. Your iPhone will do the calculations and display the data in the Health app, under “Respiratory.”
The ban followed a 2023 International Trade Commission ruling that Apple violated Masimo’s patents, forcing Apple to disable the feature and halt certain imports.
To make sure you get the feature, update your paired iPhone to iOS 18.6.1 and the Apple Watch to watchOS 11.6.1. And heads up: it only applies to watches sold in the U.S. after the ban went into effect and originally lacked the feature. Older or international models remain unchanged
The timing is good for Apple – its big September event is just weeks away, where it’s expected to unveil new iPhones and the Apple Watch Series 11, which is rumored to offer even more health features.
