ROSS KOHAN: The majority owner of the Dallas Mavericks is no stranger to betting big on a legacy of success.
In December of 2023, billionaire Mark Cuban sold a 69% stake of the Dallas Mavericks to Las Vegas Sands owner Miriam Adelson and family for $3.5 billion
And, in Sands-like fashion, Adelson’s first 18 months at the helm have been, well, a gamble.
In a move that shocked the NBA world, the Mavs traded their superstar, Luca Doncić to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025.
However the Adelson family is no stranger to parting with home-grown stars. In 2021, Las Vegas Sands sold its Las Vegas properties – which included the Venetian Resort – for more than $6 billion.
However, the Adelson family – as well as Maverick fans – should hope the similarities don’t end there.
Adelson’s late husband, Sheldon, purchased the Sands Hotel and Casino in 1988 for $110 million. The business is now worth roughly $29 billion.
And her tenure as Mavs majority owner is off to a promising start, with the organization adding $200 million to its worth from 2023 to 2024. Both the Mavericks and Las Vegas Sands saw increases in operating income and net revenue during that time.
And, of course, when it comes to gambling – you’re going to need a little luck. The Adelsons bet big with their acquisition of the Sands – a move that has seen its value increase by roughly 25,000%.
