CAROLINE WOODS: The summer travel season is in full swing and airlines could be facing a new headache – cybercrime!
The FBI is warning that a cybercriminal group called “Scattered Spider” successfully breached the computer networks of multiple airlines in the United States and Canada this month.
Scattered Spider’s members include financially motivated-English speaking young adults who use phishing and social engineering techniques to gain access to networks where they steal data and deploy ransomware.
The FBI’s warning follows two cyber incidents affecting Hawaiian Airlines and Canada’s WestJet earlier this month. “Anyone in the airline ecosystem, including trusted vendors and contractors, could be at risk,” according to the FBI.
The aviation industry is the third major US business sector hit by cyber attacks in the past two months. The criminal group was previously tied to cyber attacks on the insurance and retail industries.
