CAROLINE WOODS: Bargain hunters, mark your calendars – Amazon Prime Day is returning next month and shoppers will have double the days to shop. Amazon announced its annual summer shopping event will be extended to 4 days – from July 8th through the 11th – with deep discounts on brands including Levi’s, Samsung and Kiehl’s. Also new this year, Amazon is introducing “Today’s Big Deals—themed daily deals exclusive to Prime members, while supplies last.
Last year, Amazon’s 2-day shopping event broke records. It generated $14.2 billion in global sales across the 48-hour period with an average discount of 18-percent, according to Capital One Shopping.
The “deal drops” come at a time when consumers are turning cautious amid uncertainty over tariffs and the economy. US Retail Sales declined a worse than expected 0.9% last month. That’s the largest decline in sales in four months, with particular weakness in autos, building materials and garden equipment. However, online sales actually rose 0.9% – which could bode well for retailers like Amazon.
