Here’s how to stand out in a competitive job market.

ANDREW MCCASKILL: My advice for job seekers who are trying to stand out in today’s job market is one skills, skills, skills. You’ve got to be able to talk about your skills in real life in the interview process, and you’ve got to be able to market your skills on your LinkedIn profile and on your resume. The other thing that I would say is network. Your network is gold when it comes to being able to find opportunities and opportunities that may be good for you. Here’s the thing though. The people in your group chat may not know exactly what they need to say about you to a potential hiring manager, so you need to tell them.
People in your network may not know that you’re open for work. You need to tell them managing your network is going to be really helpful in this market. The final thing is, is be really mindful about what you post. I think that now is the time for you to start posting about what you do best, what your workplace superpowers are and, you know, don’t get caught up into the fray of all of the other conversations that may be happening right now online and in digital spaces, because everybody’s going to search for you to see what they can find out about you before you go into an interview. You might want to lean into the professional stuff now more than ever.
The average applicant is taking much longer to find work even taking much longer to get to the interview process. We’re seeing people post on the platform about how much longer the job search is taking. And I think that people should start to anticipate those cycles being much longer than they’re used to. They should probably also anticipate handling those cycles in different ways, thinking about how they’re going to negotiate. When it’s a buyer’s market, you might not get the same benefits and incentives or even salaries that you could get in a time where the employee is in the pole position. So you may have to think about this entire process completely differently than you’ve had to think about it in previous years. So think about how you’re going to attack it, how you’re going to be strategic about it, how you’re going to rehearse for all the conversations that you’ll have, because every conversation will matter in this market.
