An NBA legend and a former First Lady have teamed up and entered what’s already a crowded market.

Loren Torres: The sports-drink market is a $25 billion industry and is filled with some of the most recognizable names on the planet. But two more famous faces just threw their hats in the ring. NBA champion Stephen Curry and former First Lady Michelle Obama are launching their own drink brand called PLEZi.
In a statement, Curry said, “We’ve created something with smart ingredients and unbeatable flavor, so people can fuel their bodies the right way. No nonsense, no shortcuts — because the next generation deserves better.”
PLEZi aims to be a healthier alternative to the sports drinks currently on the market — the drink has no added sugar or artificial sweeteners, and contains a full daily dose of vitamin C. The health aspect, of course, mirrors Michelle Obama’s push to give kids healthier options.
But Curry and Obama will have an uphill battle – as Gatorade owns 61% of the sports drink marketshare, and Powerade and BodyArmor combined make up an additional 26%.
