NBA history comes at a steep price.

If you’ve ever wanted to own a piece of NBA history, here’s your chance. Jerseys Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant wore during their rookie seasons are hitting the auction block. But if you have aspirations of a winning bid, you’re going to need deep pockets. Sotheby’s announced that it expects the jerseys to sell for around $10 million a piece.
The reason? The pieces are just too rare. According to the auction house “Early rookie jerseys represent the genesis of an athlete’s career” and that “the historical weight of these two jerseys is difficult to overstate. They are as rare as they come.”
The Jordan jersey is from his first game as a Chicago Bull on October 5, 1984. Kobe’s jersey was worn during his first pre-season game and his first regular season game with the Lakers in 1996.
Jordan has seen one of his previous jerseys eclipse the $10 million mark – that one he wore in Game 1 of the 1998 NBA finals.
However, that’s less than half the amount the most expensive jersey ever put up at auction brought in. The jersey Babe Ruth wore when he “called his shot” in the 1932 World Series sold for more than $24 million in August of 2024.
