Apple working on ‘giant foldable iPad’: report
ShareShareShareShareShare

Apple is reportedly working on a “giant foldable iPad” as it explores ways to boost its product lineup.

The device is envisioned as “something akin to a giant iPad that unfolds into the size of two iPad Pros side-by-side,” Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in his “Power On” newsletter on Sunday. Current iPad Pros are available in 11-inch and 13-inch models.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company is reportedly aiming to eliminate the screen “crease” that typically appears on foldable devices. Early versions have limited the crease but not eliminated it entirely.

The foldable iPad could hit stores by 2028, the report said. It has already been in development for a few years, but details about its capabilities – such as which operating system it will use – remain scant.

Gurman speculated that the device would have “elements” of both Apple’s current iPads and its Mac computers and added that the company’s iPadOS software should be able to run more advanced apps by 2028.

Apple has also been working on the possibility of a foldable iPhone, though Gurman said he doesn’t expect it to appear “before 2026 at the earliest.”

Apple shares were flat in Monday trading. The company did not immediately return a request for comment.

The company still derives the bulk of its revenue from sales of the iPhone and recently unveiled its first AI-enabled version of the device.

However, Apple has increasingly sought to generate revenue from other devices and software offerings as smartphone sales slowed in recent years.

Last year, Apple unveiled a $3,500 “Vision Pro” virtual-reality headset to much fanfare – but has scaled back production due to lackluster sales.
