The biggest election in the history ever is being played out in India right now.
India’s 2019 general elections, which takes place in seven phases, began in April and runs through May. And, it will decide the leadership and direction of the country for a population of 1.3 billion people for the next five years.
About 900 million Indian citizens are eligible to vote, which is more than double the size of the U.S.’s population.
Why is this election so important?
Voters will ultimately get to decide whether India is ready for a change.
In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his nationalist Bharatiya Janata party came to power with a historic landslide victory in the last national polls.
Investors should note that the Indian markets appear to be in favor of a victory for the current prime minister again.
The cost of the elections have been forecasted to cost around $14 billion – double the cost of the 2014 general election, which came out to be about $7 billion. That would make India’s 2019 general election the world’s most expensive election.
Who will end up being the winner?
On May 23rd, the result will be announced.
