Ashley Park, the Broadway and Emily in Paris star who recently had a pivotal role in the Emmy-winning Netflix hit Beef, revealed today that she is recuperating from critical septic shock, a severe form of sepsis in which the body overreacts to an infection.
“As I sit here processing and recovering from the first few weeks of 2024, the only word I can think of is grateful,” Park writes in an Instagram post today that also includes a series of photos and videos from her hospital stay (see it below). “What started as tonsillitis spiraled into critical septic shock, which infected and affected several of my organs.”
The health crisis occurred when Park and her Emily in Paris co-star Paul Forman were vacation in December and into the New Year’s holiday.
“I am grateful that my health has improved despite what we had initially been told,” she writes.
Park, a major Broadway star since her roles in Mamma Mia!, The King and I, Mean Girls and Grand Horizons, recently has appeared in some of the buzziest TV shows and films, including the Mean Girls movie adaptation, Only Murders in the Building, Emily in Paris and Beef. In that Emmy-winning limited series, she played Naomi, the busybody neighbor of Ali Wong’s Amy, whose interference has major consequences.
Park writes that she was on vacation in the Maldives when the case of tonsillitis cascaded into a very serious health crisis. She expresses her gratitude to Forman for remaining by her side throughout the ordeal; a photo and video depicts the two holding hands and kissing though neither has previously commented on a romantic relationship.
“You calmed my fears and held me through ambulances, three foreign hospitals, a week in the ICU, scary ERs, countless scans and tests and injections, excruciating pain, and so much confusion all while we were alone on the other side of the world far from those we know,” she writes, addressing Forman. “I love you Paul. More than I can ever say.”
The 32-year-old Park says she is “deeply grateful” to the ICU nurses and doctors for their aid, and says the Joali Being resort responded immediately and stayed with the actor “to provide language translations and vital support.”
She ends her message with “Thanks for reading this. Im sorry for being so absent recently to so much and to people in my life. I love you all. I’m healing and I promise I’m gonna be okay.”
Park’s disclosure of her ordeal was immediately met by well-wishers, both famous and not, in her IG responses, including notes of support from Broadway stars James Iglehart, Sarah Bareilles, Michael Urie and Matt Doyle, TV’s Mindy Kaling, Selena Gomez, Ken Jeong and Busy Phillipps, and film’s Glen Powell, among many othes.
Emily in Paris star Lily Collins wrote, “I can hardly look at these without crying. I love you sister and I’m forever grateful you’re on the other side of this and for @peforman for your incredibly huge heart and for being there every step of the way. I cannot wait to hug you both.”
