Tonight marks the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards, celebrating achievements in both film and TV, as voted on by print, broadcast, and digital journalists who cover entertainment. Chelsea Handler is returning to host the ceremony for the second year in a row, which will take place at Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport. Originally set to take place at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, the awards were moved to the airport’s entertainment venue to avoid crossing the picket line, as the hotel’s staff is among the Southern California hotels currently in a labor dispute.
On the awards front, it’s another big night for Barbie, which leads with a whopping 18 nominations—a record for the ceremony, while Oppenheimer and Poor Things follow with 13, and Killers of the Flower Moon earned 12. On the television front, The Morning Show comes in with six nods while Succession racked up five.
While the stars tend to play it safe for the bigger awards shows, smaller ceremonies give attendees the chance to experiment with their fashion. Among last year’s fashion standouts were Elle Fanning in a sculptural Alexander McQueen riddled with cutouts, Kerry Washington in a floral beaded Armani, Julia Garner in a red-hot mesh paneled Ferragamo, Viola Davis in a glittering Valentino, and Amanda Seyfried in a bronze Dior Haute Couture.
What will the stars wear tonight at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards? While only time will tell, we can perhaps look to previous awards shows from this year’s circuit for an indication. Perhaps they’ll take a cue from the Golden Globes red carpet with their peplums and mermaid gowns galore; or maybe we can expect some of the more heart-racing, experimental looks of the Governors Awards.
