Stock value assumes $100 was spent in early January the year you were born, and sold in January 2023 and is shown as birth year then stock value at the start of 2023. For IBM, they split stock in 1997 (which doubles the shares you have), again in 1999, and then a very weird 1.046 increase in stock in 2021 – so if you bought stock before 1997, that would have been the best timing!
