What Joe Burrow’s wrist injury means for the Cincinnati Bengals
ShareShareShareShareShare

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a right wrist injury in a 34-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Burrow appeared to be in pain after throwing a touchdown pass to running back Joe Mixon in the second quarter.
  • He went to the medical tent after the play then attempted to throw passes on the sideline but was unable to.
  • As he jogged to the locker room, Amazon’s Kaylee Hartung reported Burrow could not “grip the ball and could not raise his elbow.”
  • Burrow was 11-of-17 passing for 101 yards and a score before leaving the game. He was replaced by backup quarterback Jake Browning, who finished 8-of-14 passing for 68 yards and a touchdown.

What it means to lose Burrow

The worst case scenario unfolded for the Bengals. As long as they have Burrow they have a chance and the immediacy with which Burrow grabbed at his right hand following the touchdown pass to Mixon was a bad sign. It was only made worse when he attempted to throw on the sideline twice and couldn’t do it, instead crouching over in pain following the attempt.

Burrow has battled injuries all year, now finally recovered from the calf, this is the last thing he or Cincinnati needs entering a critical stretch of the season with back-to-back AFC North games. — Paul Dehner Jr., Bengals beat writer

What to expect from Browning

Browning won the backup quarterback job over Trevor Siemian in training camp, but it was far from pretty for long stretches. The Bengals liked the development of Browning, a former undrafted free agent from Washington.

Still, he’s never played in an regular-season game and the idea of him being thrown to the fire in this spot is far from what Cincinnati could be prepared for. Browning has good mobility and that might be a trait Zac Taylor leans into. — Dehner
