Why are Humans Dreading Artificial Intelligence AI?
ShareShareShareShareShare

The pace of innovation in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is astonishing. AI is now the driving force behind technologies like Robotics, IoT, and Big Data, and Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are gaining widespread attention. With AI, computers can make smart decisions and discoveries from vast amounts of data, paving the way for more innovation in the future.

However, this rise of AI has sparked concerns among some. They fear AI might take jobs and, in the future, operate independently of humans. This article explores why humans are dreading AI and how we can address and alleviate their fears and misconceptions.

How can AI improve human lives?

Healthcare

The healthcare industry is already experiencing a transformation thanks to AI. Using its data analysis capabilities, AI can detect diseases faster and with more accuracy. For example, it can spot signs of cancer when it’s easier to treat. It can streamline the process of drug discovery and can even act like a virtual nurse to keep a check on patients.

Transportation

As Autonomous Vehicles become more prevalent, they’re set to revolutionize the transportation industry. These cars leverage AI to drive safely and efficiently, reducing accidents and making travel easier. Beyond this, AI finds other roles in transportation, like smart voice assistants in cars, to help with navigation, answer questions, and make driving more convenient and enjoyable. Additionally, AI is now being used creatively to design cars. It can develop new ideas for making vehicles more efficient, comfortable, and environmentally friendly.

Education

AI has the power to transform education for people of all ages. It uses smart technologies like machine learning, understanding human language, and recognizing faces to improve learning. For instance, AI can turn regular textbooks into digital ones, making it easier to learn from screens. It also helps catch plagiarism, ensuring everyone learns fairly. Moreover, AI can even tell if a student is finding the lesson too hard or too easy by looking at their emotions, so it can adjust the learning to fit them better.

Beyond these areas, AI has the potential to transform numerous other sectors. It’s currently enhancing customer service with chatbots and virtual assistants. It’s even making our homes smarter, controlling devices like thermostats and lights. The possibilities for AI are vast and continue to expand.

Despite its usefulness, worries about AI have been increasing. Let’s discuss the reasons why humans are dreading AI.

“Forward-thinking companies that recognize the immense potential of AI and actively seek ways to incorporate it into their daily operations are positioning themselves for success. It’s not a matter of AI versus humans; it’s about AI collaborating with humans as AI is here to complement human capabilities and enable us to achieve more than ever before. It is our collective responsibility to educate our teams and harness this technology to not only improve our individual efficiency and productivity but also to envision how it can elevate entire industries. Together, we have the opportunity to usher in an era of unparalleled progress and innovation,”
– Shubham A. Mishra, Co-founder and Global CEO at Pixis

In March 2023, more than a thousand experts in the field of AI, including Elon Musk, issued an open letter and called for a few month’s pause in the development of massive AI systems so that their risks could be properly understood.

One of the main reasons behind this fear is that the experts believe that in the near future, AI may be able to work independently of humans – it may begin to develop its own goals. Given the rate at which AI systems are improving, such a scenario, previously seen as a sci-fi possibility, is now believed to be a matter of time.

The experts also predict that AI will threaten human autonomy, and computers may match or even exceed human intelligence in tasks like pattern recognition, analytics, and complex decision-making.

We want artificial intelligence to not only be smart but also to respect what humans care about, like keeping our information private. If we do this wrong, it can be quite dangerous. Sometimes, having a lot of data can help us do good things, like stop unwanted emails and suggest things we might like. But sometimes, it can also impact our privacy and right to be treated fairly.

The fear of job loss is another reason people are anxious about AI. A few months ago, BT decided to cut up to 55,000 jobs by 2030 as it pushes into AI. AI is also affecting education, where tools like ChatGPT can write student essays quickly, and GPT-4 performed well on the US bar exam. However, when we talk about AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), the risks become even more serious, even potentially life-threatening.

How do we overcome the challenges and risks of AI?

  • Governments could restrict the amount of computing power and data that tech companies can use to train AI.
  • We could limit the knowledge that AI can access. For example, we could withhold information about biotech, nuclear weapons, or personal details.
  • We could demand transparency from AI companies and AI itself. For example, we could require that all AI bots identify themselves as bots and not pretend to be human.
  • We could also develop ethical principles and guidelines for AI design, development, and deployment, such as fairness, accountability, transparency, and human dignity.
  • The public and the workforce should be educated and trained on the benefits and risks of AI, as well as the skills and competencies needed to interact with and use AI systems effectively.
  • Additionally, robust and reliable methods should be developed to monitor, audit, and evaluate AI systems, such as explainable AI, adversarial testing, or human oversight.
  • Lastly, innovation and AI research should be promoted to address global challenges and social issues, such as health, education, environment, or human rights.

Conclusion

AI is a powerful and promising technology that can enhance human capabilities and improve our lives. However, AI also has the potential to be misused, and it’s important that we understand the risks and challenges of AI so that we can use it safely and responsibly.

Moreover, we can also embrace the opportunities and benefits that AI brings, such as solving global problems, advancing scientific knowledge, and creating new forms of art and expression. AI is not something to be feared but rather understood, regulated, and utilized wisely.
