Ground has been broken on a new museum honoring Navajo Code Talkers. At age 94, Peter MacDonald is one of three still alive today. Their service was pivotal in winning World War II, but Marine Corps top brass initially rejected the idea, saying they “might embarrass this proud organization,” MacDonald recalls. Their success was a cruel paradox in light of America’s painful history of Native American boarding schools meant to strip students of their heritage.
