In the Spring of 1945, then-Princess Elizabeth served as a mechanic in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, holding the rank of Second Subaltern. Months later, she also joined her family in uniform on the balcony of Buckingham Palace as Britain celebrated the victorious end of World War II.
