Auction house Christie’s announced sales of more than $7.1 billion for 2013 — that’s a 16% rise from the year before and the highest sales total for any auction house in history. Christie’s said sales were driven by new buyers across geographic markets, including China and online. Christie’s top ten sales of the year included the cushion-cut “Princie” diamond, which weighs more than 34.6 carats and sold for $39.3 million in April in New York — the most a diamond has ever sold at U.S. auction.
