Fast-casual restaurants Panera Bread and Potbelly both reported lower-than-expected quarterly revenue after the bell Tuesday, blaming wintry weather for weak same-store sales. Potbelly reported company-owned same-store sales a paltry 0.7% higher and revenue miss the mark by more than $1 million, while Panera Bread said comparable-store sales will be 2.2% lower for the first 48 days of 2014. Is this simply a case of cold weather dampening consumers’ appetite to spend or is there a larger trend at play?
