Hollywood’s increasing reliance on expensive “tentpole” movies and the rise of high quality cable TV shows are jeopardizing the movie business, says Anne Thompson, author of “The $11 Billion Year”. Thompson says the studios are hurting their own futures, and the theater chains as well, by moving away from mid-priced pictures in favor of high-risk blockbusters. Meanwhile, Hollywood A-listers are choosing cable TV roles because they can no longer command huge paychecks as box office draws.
