Major banks in the U.S. and U.K. have until April 8 to update software in their ATM network or risk a pricey invoice from Microsoft. As early as 2007, the tech giant warned its support for Windows XP would lapse, but since then only one-third of the world’s ATMs have had their software upgraded. Once the deadline passes, banks will have to negotiate individual contracts to extend Microsoft support, an essential component to keep the machines secure from hacking and viruses.
