Investors are increasingly adding non-traded alternative assets like commercial real estate and pre-IPO ventures to their IRAs, says Kelly Rodriques, CEO of PENSCO, which holds $10B of assets in custody. Rodriques says placing less liquid assets in retirement accounts improves investor choice, control and diversification. He says he is seeing more private equity in IRAs due to the rise of crowdfunding opportunities. Finally, Rodriques says private equity may offer tax advantages in IRAs, but it remains a higher-risk asset.
