Is it a deal delayed, or a deal denied for Dollar Tree? The discount retailer’s attempt to buy Family Dollar for $8.5 billion was thwarted yet again, as shareholders decided to cool their heels until the new year, and pushed off a vote on the mega-merger until 2015. Dollar General shares rose on the news, as the company continues to push an Federal Trade Commission review that might allow it to buy Family Dollar, factoring in conditions. In a year of mega-mergers, this is one deal that won’t happen in 2014 — but Jim Cramer’s Action Alert Pick, Dollar General, looks to have gained on the news.
