U.S. major indexes gained ground at Friday’s opening bell as we return from Christmas and stores await sale-seekers before the new year. Many retailers are offering additional discounts on the already heavily reduced items. Some of the bestsellers this season include the iPhone 6, toys based on Disney’s movie ‘Frozen’, winter coats and coffee makers. But according to industry watchers, store traffic has not been as robust as expected. Super Saturday sales from shoppers who waited until the last Saturday before Christmas to shop rose 0.5% from last year to $9.2 billion, but that was short of forecasts. ‘The Interview’ finally opened on Christmas day in more than 300 theaters in the U.S. and became available digitally on Google Play, YouTube Movies, Microsoft Xbox Video and a separate Sony website. There was no violence on premiere day as threatened by hackers. The digital release marks another step for Google to establish YouTube as an entertainment hub as ‘The Interview’ was the first movie from a major studio to be released in theater and online at the same time. ‘The Interview’ is predicted to gross $30 million in the opening weekend. Its production budget was only $40 million.
