New Year’s Eve: It’s the day to flush out what’s left of what once was an overly ambitious 2014 savings account to spend it all on one last night of festivities. And speaking of overspending, that’s what passengers planning to use Uber should expect to do after the ball drops in Times Square. The ride-hailing app expects this New Year’s Eve to be its busiest night ever. Due to high demand — and because it can — Uber is bringing back surge pricing, a boon to its drivers but a bane to passengers. Fares can increase sevenfold during the busiest hours between 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. There are other options depending on where you live, however, in addition to public transportation or just staying home. Upstart rivals are seeking to undercut Uber on price and there’s even a company offering to drive you home in your own car.
