Laura Cooper sat down with Senior Writer Amanda Levin to discuss The Deal exclusively reporting on Tuesday, January 6, that Columbus, Ohio-based American Electric Power Co., with a $29 billion market capitalization, hired Goldman Sachs to explore strategic alternatives for its unregulated, merchant generation business. The power plant portfolio likely will fetch $350 to $450 per kilowatt hour, which could result in a sale price ranging from approximately $2.8 billion to $3.6 billion. So, it may not make a lot of sense to have an unregulated business due to fluctuations in commodity prices.
