AmerisourceBergen announced on Jan. 12 that it inked a deal to acquire Boise, Idaho-based MWI Veterinary Supply for $2.5 billion. The MWI acquisition, which will provide Pennsylvania-based AmerisourceBergen with a presence in animal health, will allow the company to provide its logistics expertise and global reach to MWI’s operations to spark growth. Under the terms of the deal, AmerisourceBergen will pay $190 per share for MWI, representing a nearly 9% premium. Another large healthcare deal was announced on Jan. 11. Irish pharma company Shire announced that it picked up rare disease specialist NPS Pharmaceuticals for $5.2 billion. This is Shire’s largest ever acquisition and it is occurring just three months after Abbvie pulled its $48.5 billion takeover agreement because of a U.S. clampdown on tax inversions. One of the major risks of the NPS deal is that it is still awaiting FDA approval for its drug Natpara, and Shire is obligated to close the deal regardless of the outcome.
