The web has done more harm than good and the government needs to start cracking down on tech behemoths like Google and Amazon, said Andrew Keen, author of ‘The Internet Is Not The Answer’. Keen said that an expanding circle of wealthy ‘monopolistic’ companies including Amazon, Facebook, Google and Spotify are slowly making consumers poorer. Rather than generating jobs, he said these digital disruptors are increasing unemployment and creating a chasm between rich and poor. Keen said the internet is empowering mob rule as opposed to promoting democracy, as well as encouraging a culture of distraction, vulgarity, and narcissism.
