President Obama heads to India for the second time during his administration this weekend. When Obama arrives in New Delhi on Sunday he will join the Indian capital’s masses in breathing some of the world’s most polluted air. Obama will be in India to discuss the country’s biggest environmental woe: its heavy reliance on fossil fuels. But, don’t expect to see a deal come out of India like what we saw in China – where that country set a date for its emission to peak. Instead, the two sides are expected to build on the roughly $1 billion already spent under a U.S.-India clean energy partnership. The plan is estimated to require $162 billion in investment. But analysts say all that investment may not be necessary as market forces come into play. Troubles in India’s coal industry have already driven investors to the solar market, and many of the approved new coal projects are stalled thanks to lack of financing or coal supplies.
