David Peltier, Portfolio Manager of the Dividend Stock Advisor newsletter, helps investors figure out when to buy a stock in order to receive a dividend. Dividends are everywhere, but this answer cannot easily be found. Usually, investors are given the record date or the ex-date, but these are not the dividend cutoff dates. To answer this questions, Peltier defines a new term he coined, the “must-own” date. An upcoming dividend with Pfizer (PFE) is used to help visualize this topic. Investors can actually sell a stock after the must-own date and still receive this dividend, which is usually paid a couple of weeks later.
