Auto Trader Ltd., the website for used car sales, has been prepped for an IPO this April. Its current owner, London-based private equity firm Apax Partners, has hired bankers to ready the offering. The firm bought the used car dealership website from the Guardian Media Group, the British newspaper chain, early last year. However, British business reports are saying that the U.S. PE firm Hellman Friedman may be preparing a preemptory bid of $3 billion that would take the business private before the IPO can occur. Apax has not commented on the reports, and there is no word now as to whether the IPO will go through.
