Technology has democratized the independent film business by enabling young directors to shoot at low costs and even distribute their movies on worldwide platforms like iTunes and Netflix, said Edward Burns, writer/director and author of ‘Independent Ed.’ Burns added that small, personal, story-driven movies appeal to him far more than the massively budgeted blockbusters Hollywood continues to churn out. He said independent movies may be risky investments, yet they will continue to get made because investors love being involved with the movies. Finally, Burns said he made a microcap movie for a total of $125K and turned a profit, demonstrating that it indeed can be done.
