With shares of Tesla off about 30% from its highs of last summer and analysts still divided on the stock, The Deal senior writer Lou Whiteman explains why he believes some activism could get the company on track. Whiteman says Tesla is at a crossroads. Although it is a company with tremendous technology and a lot of hype, its financials have so far not delivered. He details why Tesla could benefit from some new voices urging it to make some tough decisions about the direction it’s going in and perhaps narrow its focus accordingly. For now, Whiteman doesn’t believe it’s very likely that an activist becomes involved as the stock is still highly-valued. But, if the stock continues to decline and more skepticism creeps in, Whiteman says an activist may see that as an opportunity to shake things up.
