This week marks the 50th anniversary of Moore’s Law, which was a theory espoused by Intel (INTC) Founder Gordon Moore, and said the processing power of transistors will double every two years. Intel, which started with a microprocessor was 10,000 nanometers in size, today is just 14 nanometers and contains close to 2 billion transistors. Intel Futurist Steve Brown says, ‘Moore’s law will hold true for at least another 10 years. Obviously, you can’t cut a piece of string in half forever, but you can continue to shrink. I think there are always going to be ways that you can continue to innovate, continue to bring more compute power, so I think we’ve got a ways to go yet.’ While infrastructure investment runs into the billions of dollars each year, ‘Intel makes 10 billion transistors a second right now and that’s only going to increase, and then the volume economics make sense,’ says Brown.
